Undercounter, Drawer and Beverage Center Repair in Rancho Santa Fe
Sub-Zero groups its undercounter equipment into five categories, refrigeration, wine storage, drawers, beverage centers and ice makers, and a property up here usually owns four of them without anyone thinking of them as appliances. The bar cabinet, the drawers in the island, the beverage center in the butler’s pantry, the unit out by the pool. They all reject heat through a grille a few inches off the floor into cabinetry built to hide them, and that one fact explains most of what goes wrong with them.
What this covers in Rancho Santa Fe
Every undercounter and drawer unit on the property, worked on in the opening it was installed in: the grille cleared, the drain proved, the door and its overlay panel brought back into line, and the temperature read inside the cabinet rather than off the display.
- Beverage centers and bar cabinets that run warm through the afternoon and recover overnight
- Refrigerator and freezer drawers in island and perimeter cabinetry
- Undercounter wine cabinets, including the ones fitted into closed pantries
- Undercounter ice makers: fill, harvest, drain and the condenser behind the grille
- Grille clearance where trim or a toe kick went in after the remodel
- Heavy overlay panels dragging a drawer front out of square until it stops sealing
The thing worth knowing about these units is that they are judged by the room they sit in as much as by their own condition. A beverage center standing in an open kitchen and the identical cabinet closed into a butler’s pantry are not the same machine in service terms: one has somewhere to put its heat and the other is breathing its own. So before any part is quoted we look at what the grille can actually draw and where the warm air is going, because a unit that cannot get rid of heat presents exactly like a unit with a failing sealed system, and only one of those is expensive.

The wine room read exactly the temperature I had set it to and the top rows were warm to the hand. Two other companies had been out and found nothing. He probed at bottle level in each zone and found the fan in the upper zone had stopped.
We are only in the house part of the year and came back to an ice maker that had made one batch and stopped. Welded block in the bin, iced fill tube, mineral film through the mold. He cleaned it all out and it has been fine since.
Frost kept coming back on the rear wall of the freezer column a week after I scraped it off. He tested the defrost heater in place, changed it, then found the door was sitting out of square because the wood panel on it is heavy. Both fixed.

Questions
Answers before you call
Is it worth repairing, or should we just replace the unit?
The opening usually decides it, not the appliance. A niche here was framed, trimmed and paneled around a specific model, so replacing it can mean a cabinetmaker and fresh panel work, while the actual fault is a fan motor, a thermistor, a defrost heater, a door gasket or an ice maker module. When a unit has reached the end, you hear that plainly. Rancho Santa Fe Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Experts, Rancho Santa Fe: (858) 923-5340.
